The Concrete Polishing Process

The concrete polishing process to create a beautiful and hard-wearing floor includes a series of prescribed steps which we will outline for you here today. The steps are always in the same order, although certain steps may take a longer or shorter amount of time depending on the initial condition of the floor.

1. The floor needs first to be squeaky clean.

That means it would need to be thoroughly vacuumed and washed. Sometimes a chemical agent is used to clean the floor if it is exceptionally dirty.

2. Special stains need special treatment.

If the floor has some specific stains, these may need to be treated and the offending material removed. For example, oil stains may need special treatment.

3. Holes or cracks

If the floor has some damage from holes or cracks these need to be attended to and filled.

4. Polishing

Once these initial steps are complete, then one can start polishing. Polishing a concrete floor requires sanding with several different grits that start out very coarse and end with something very fine, not unlike how wood is sanded.

This polishing is completed with special machines using (typically) diamond-studded discs. This is because concrete is obviously very hard, so you need something very hard to polish it.

5. Colour

If any colouring is to be added that is done at this stage after the floor is perfectly polished.

6. Sealant

After all of the above is done, then often some type of sealant and/or finish is applied to make the floor less porous and easier to clean.

These are the steps for polishing an unfinished concrete floor. How long the process takes depends on the footprint of the area to be polished and the initial condition of the floor.
